Late Eocene–early Miocene evolution of the southern Australian subtropical front: a marine palynological approach

چکیده
Abstract. Improvements in our capability to reconstruct ancient surface-ocean conditions based on organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) assemblages from the Southern Ocean provide an opportunity better establish past position, strength and oceanography of subtropical front (STF). Here, we aim late Eocene early Miocene (37–20 Ma) depositional palaeoceanographic history STF context evolving Tasmanian Gateway as well potential influence Antarctic circumpolar flow intense waxing waning ice. We approach this by combining information seismic lines (revisiting existing data generating new marine palynological Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 1168A) western continental slope. apply improved taxonomic insights palaeoecological models sea surface palaeoenvironmental evolution. 36. Late Miocene Paleoenvironments and Tectonic Setting of the Southern
During drilling of Leg 160 in the Eastern Mediterranean (April−May, 1995), Messinian (i.e., uppermost Miocene) facies were identified at a site at the base of the Cyprus slope (Site 968) and at two sites on the Eratosthenes Seamount (Sites 965 and 967). The new results can be compared with the recovery of Messinian evaporites from the Florence Rise west of Cyprus (Deep Sea Drilling Project Site...
متن کاملEvolution of the Australian-Antarctic discordance since Miocene time
In this study we chronicle the development of the Australian-Antarctic discordance (AAD), the crenelated portion of the Southeast Indian Ridge between -120 ø and 128øE, since anomaly 6y time (19 Ma). We reconstruct satellite-derived marine gravity fields and depth anomalies at selected times by first removing anomalies overlying seafloor younger than the selected age, and then rotating the rema...
متن کاملAustralian shelf sediments reveal shifts in Miocene Southern Hemisphere westerlies
Global climate underwent a major reorganization when the Antarctic ice sheet expanded ~14 million years ago (Ma) (1). This event affected global atmospheric circulation, including the strength and position of the westerlies and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and, therefore, precipitation patterns (2-5). We present new shallow-marine sediment records from the continental shelf of Aus...
متن کاملSouthern Ocean seasonal temperature and Subtropical Front movement on the South Tasman Rise in the late Quaternary
[1] The Subtropical Front (STF) marking the northern boundary of the Southern Ocean has a steep gradient in sea surface temperature (SST) of approximately 4 C over 0.5 of latitude. Presently, in the region south of Tasmania, the STF lies nominally at 47 S in the summer and 45 S in the winter. We present here SST reconstructions in a latitudinal transect of cores across the South Tasman Rise, so...
